We invite scholars, educators and practitioners to contribute to an edited volume exploring sustainable fashion praxis across the Global South.

Working title: Situated Fashion Futures: Fashion Praxis and Plural Perspectives from the Global South

Grounded in South Africa and attentive to the diverse histories, knowledge traditions and lived realities of Global South contexts, this edited volume invites contributions that examine sustainable fashion praxis within wider Global South contexts. It asks how sustainability might be understood when approached from, for, and within these contexts, rather than primarily through frameworks developed within Euro-American contexts and frequently treated as universally applicable.

The volume does not approach Global South perspectives as a singular or culturally fixed category; instead, it foregrounds plural, situated and critically reflexive ways of knowing, being, making and imaging fashion sustainability. The volume invites contributors to examine how fashion is shaped through material conditions and cultural meanings, as well as through care, aesthetics, aspiration, spirituality, identity, inequality, local production and relational philosophies, including Ubuntu where contextually appropriate.

The volume seeks to move beyond narrow technical, market-led and consumption-centred approaches of sustainability. It asks how fashion sustainability might be reoriented towards ecological integrity, social justice, collective responsibility and more-than-human flourishing. Contributions that connect critique with praxis: understanding existing conditions while also enacting or imagining possibilities for transformation.  Contributions may be theoretical, conceptual, empirical, practice-based, pedagogical or interdisciplinary. They may address established and emerging practices, historical and contemporary conditions, or speculative and transformative futures.

Prospective contributors are invited to submit an initial indication of interest by 28 August 2026 using the following form:
