Doman, Jakob A.

Profile

Current Institution:

My background as Practitioner is grounded in a combination of experience in the Commercial Advertising, Editorial and Fine Art arenas for which I have been honoured with both local (Loeries) and international (D & AD - London) and (Clio - New York) Awards as well as being shortlisted for the Daimler-Chrysler Award in 2004.

As an educator, I focus my interests on the diverse fields of moral theology, applied aesthetics, digital image sensitometry, digital convergence and practise-based arts research methodologies. By creating a synergy from these seemingly disparate fields, I employ a multi-faceted and holistic educational approach that, hopefully, offers intellectual stimulation and creative awareness to students and colleagues alike.

Photography, Film & Multimedia

From inception, the Camera Picture, being a technological medium, has been inherently in a volatile relationship with innovation that required a constant re-structuring of the academic curriculum in the formal education of the practitioner to embrace the possibilities offered through new imaging technologies, a process which occurred over a period of decades, sufficient time to adapt and engage in a meaningful manner with the discourse of both making and teaching.

A Structured Reflection Framework To Implement Visual Research As Practise-Based Arts
Research Design Illustrated Within An Applied Photographic Educational Context

Although various South African universities engage with art practice research methodologies, the research designs employed have not been clearly articulated or interrogated as of yet, leaving some work to be done towards answering Loxley and Prosser’s (2005) call for a refinement of arts-based research methods.
